In this lesson I learned about the receptive language skills. Those skills are reading and listening. I learned how to best go about teaching those skills. I learned that I can use scaffolding techniques, like pre-teaching problematic vocabulary, to allow the students to read the materials. However, I learned that I should not go overboard and teach them every single word in the passage. It is important for the students to be able to learn to read without needing full understanding of every word. I learned about various techniques that readers and listeners employ, like skimming/scanning, deduction, and prediction. As a teacher, I need to try to incorporate all the language skills and get students to use various techniques for a full understanding of the language.
