There are four basic skills in any language, the receptive shills of reading and listening, and the productive skills of speaking and writing. All are of equal importance and a balanced class will encompass each skill. Reading and listening can fit into 2 categories, that of having a purpose, we read in order to find out about something, and that of entertainment, we read because we enjoy it. We often read or listen for both a purpose and for interest or pleasure. Reading and listening requires more than just vocabulary and grammar, it also involves interpretation of ideas as well as an understanding of cultural knowledge... all topics to be included in the language class.
