This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit was short and sweet, to end the TESOL course. It had very good advice for first lessons. That was something not really told to me and I had some bumpy first lessons when I first started teaching. Your first couple of lessons should be fun and a way to formulate trust in the classroom. ESL students need a 'safe' place to practice English and make mistakes. This is how we learn so I establish right from the start that no one makes fun of anyone in this classroom. This is the place we make mistakes and learn. Large classes are challenging but they do offer more opportunity for different group work and fun activities. Patience is probably the most important feature needed to teach ESL, especially to new students and/or quiet students. However, the reward is totally worth it!
