The unit covered the different types of lesson materials teachers can use in the classroom. It highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of authentic and created materials. Created materials give teachers more flexibility, whereas authentic materials are more interesting to students because they are real productions. In using both types of materials, teachers should be aware of their students' needs and skill level. The unit also discussed textbooks and the advantages and disadvantages of using them. The most apparent advantage of using a course book is that it provides tested and predetermined materials, decreasing the amount of prep time the teacher needs to give to a lesson. The biggest disadvantage is that students may find course books boring, since the content is not specifically catered to their interests, and is made for a wider, general audience.
