During lessons both coursebooks and authentic or created materials can be used. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages making the use of a mix of materials the best solution. Course books are useful because they are graded to level and offer a balanced variety of grammar, vocabulary and skills materials. Moreover, they normally come with a teacher's book that offers a valid guideline on how to approach the lessons. Course books shouldn't be considered a solution to everything. They can't cater to all the needs and interests of the students. As a solution, teachers can design their own materials (crosswords, flashcards) to replace or supplement materials from the book or they can use authentic material (short videos, articles) that tend to be more interesting and motivating.
