In learning a new language there are 4 things students must achieve: being exposed to the new language, understand it, understand the construction of that language and the ability to practice and produce it. Lessons need to cover areas such as vocabulary, grammar and function i.e. agreeing, inviting, disagreeing, suggesting etc. Word difficulty depends on the similarity of the word to a student's L1, Similarity to english words already known, spelling/pronunciation and appropriacy. The ESA method (Engage, Study, Activate) can be used to teach and may be used in a straight arrow, boomerang or patchwork type fashion.
