This unit proved to be the most challenging thus far due to my lack of experience with the phonemic alphabet. I definitely agree that if teachers are to teach this subject they also need to study it themselves. I can appreciate that the phonemic alphabet gives the student an easier way to learn pronunciation. This is because many words in the English language sound the same, but yet they are spelled differently. The study of phonetics also goes into great detail to discuss the speech organs and what sounds are produced in what specific region of the mouth, for example sounds that are near the front of the mouth and those near the back of the mouth.
