The past tense is used for an action or event happens in past time periods. In the form of past simple, we add ?ed or -d to the base form of the verb except for irregular verbs. When a past action is completed at a definite time, the past simply is applied. The verb is added ?ing with the auxiliary verb b (was/were) in the front; it is the past continuous form. The past perfect is viewed as ?the past in the past?, which means that actions happen in the past before other past actions. Lastly, the past perfect continuous is used for a longer action had continued up to the past time or beyond that time. The past tense and the present tense have many similarities in forms and usages. It is easy to tell them apart by simply noticing if the verb ?to be? and ?to have? are in the past or present.
