This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit covered problems that may arise in a classroom, particularly at the beginning. Important tips, and one which has been recurring throughout the course, was to establish rapport with the students, find out their interests, and start firm but fair. In this unit we learnt several ways of eliciting student interests, like doing warmers at the beginning of the class. Warmers can be great for the Engage part of the lesson, so it would be beneficial if the teacher where to design them so they are related to the study phase.
Another thing that as an EFL teacher I should be aware of, is that students in one class will most likely have different levels of English. My job will be to consolidate that in a way that the stronger students are not bored in my classes, and the weaker students are not left confused and frustrated. This unit gave several ways in which to deal with the different levels. My favorite being giving the stronger students filler activities, while the rest of the class finishes the original activity. Another idea would be to make question slightly more difficult for the stringer students. So as to challenge them, even though they are doing the same content.
