I hesitate to write my reflections because I rarely make use of reading tasks in my lessons due to the nature of my specialization (oral English). However, I can observe that the ESA method here applies just as well to a reading as it does to any other activity and I think the Activate portion sounds particularly fun. I would choose Brad Pitt over Tom Cruise though! I'd also think a Star Trek, Next Generation activity could be fun, especially with more advanced students.
This lesson inspired me to a reading lesson on Jack Ma, as I knew he would generate lots of interest among my students here in China. I'm teaching education majors, so I'm a 'teachers' teacher' so to speak. We discussed a number of approaches, including benefits of pre-teaching vs. encouraging guessing, and using an o.p. we read the article on Jack Ma from Wikipedia. Ss were able to find several mistakes in the text, which was fruitful (I encouraged them to sign up to edit!), and as an Activate activity we came up with discussion questions. It turned into a good lesson, but there was not nearly as much speaking as usual.
