This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
All teachers will encounter problems that require troubleshooting. It is something that teachers should be prepared to deal with and even learn from for future improvement. In new groups, students may not know each other and be that comfortable, so it would be important to try and establish rapport between class members. For first lessons, teachers should avoid using the coursebook immediately, but spend some time to establish rapport with the students, get to know one another, language level, and the use of various games that aid in this process.
Some classes present challenges in that students have differing levels. A couple tips is to use different materials (appropriate to their level), or same materials but different tasks. Another one is to pair stronger students with weaker ones. For large classes, utilize group/pair work, choral repetition, worksheets, and even appointing group leaders. Be aware that most of the time when native language is being used, it is not to intentionally be disruptive, but they may not understand something, or are trying to communicate something. Use plenty of pair work or role-plays to encourage reluctant students to participate more in class. I think the more experience a teacher has gained by going through many troubleshooting techniques, the better they will be able to remedy any problematic situations.
