Course books and lesson materials
Course books pros- usually expected by students, less time consuming, provides a syllabus which is graded to a level suitable for students, provides security for teacher and student, has a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary and skills work, provides continuity and progression, tired and tested, usually attractive and appealing to the eye, usually provides good ideas for the inexperienced teacher.
Disadvantages - Does not always fit specific needs and interest of all class members, can become predictable and boring, can make teachers lazy and unlikely to be creative, may be outdated and unattractive to students, may stop teachers analysing particular problems students have.
The best use of course books - ability to choose and decide which best suits your group of students, do not use it for the whole lesson, think about what motivates your students and what may need adapting, supplementing or replaced, create a balanced lesson, approach the book critically by doing own research and don't base all lessons around the course book, try out new ideas and vary activities. By Omit, replace, supplement and adapt are 4 different options for course book use.
