Often the teacher has to create her own materials to supplement the course book or replace sections that are not suited for the class. For many students, the materials created by the teacher are more interesting. These materials can be divided into 2 groups: authentic materials and created materials.
Authentic materials are just about anything a native speaker would hear or read while created materials can be crosswords, role play cards, gap-fill etc. Created materials can be graded unlike authentic ones.
Course books have their own advantages and disadvantages. For best use of course books is to not base all lessons around the course book or explore ways to match the book to the needs of the students.
There are 4 different options for course books use: omit, replace, supplement and adapt.
When analyzing a course book you need to pay attention to the price, availability, design, methodology, skills, difficulty, syllabus, topic, teacher's guide and materials needed.
