This unit covered the most common situation problems that teachers can encounter in the classroom. First lessons ? The teacher should not use the course book but try to use activities in order to establish rapport, find out about the students, their needs/aspirations with English and their level of English. For example questionnaires/surveys, pass the ball game can be very useful. Warmers ? These are short, fun, communicative activities in order to get students motivated and using English. For example: hangman, pictionary, tongue twisters, memory games. Different levels ? There are a number of ways that a teacher can deal with this problem, like using different materials or using the same materials and different tasks or do not do anything at all. Another idea is to pair stronger students with the weaker ones. Large classes ? In order to involve all students the teacher can use worksheets, pair/group work, choral repetition, etc. Use of native language ? The teacher should use different techniques so that the students communicate only in English. Good idea for example is only respond in English if they have a problem or question. Reluctant students ? Use plenty of pairwork, controlled practice, role-play or a tape recorder in order to encourage students to speak. Difficulties with listening skills ? Even if it can be a problem for many students, teachers should not avoid using casettes or CDs. It is important to work with the students to help improve their listening skills.
