There are four basic skills in any language that is, receptive skills, reading and listening skills, productive skills plus speaking and writing skills. It should be noted that all are very important therefore we should try and incorporate all in to our lessons in order to have a balanced approach. We read and listen for two main reasons and these include for a purpose and for entertainment. For example reading a tour guide to a particular city may be enjoyable but it may also achieve some specific purpose if we are on holiday in that city. It should be noted that receptive skills present quite a number of potential problems which need to be addressed for example Language contained in the text, the topic and the tasks the students will do. Teachers should try to choose a variety of topics that the students may be interested in. Therefore they should make it a point to understand each of their student?s interests and likes. This will help keep the students engaged in the lessons.
