I think it is very important for students to understand the nuances of particular modals. When presented with a lot of options, students may get confused when to use them. They sometimes do not know how to use modals because they do not understand the differences, for example the difference in uncertainty or politeness. Active and passive voice is also very important. I was taught that active voice is more preferred when writing because it makes writing more clear and not so convoluted. However, there are many cases when passive voice is necessary. However, I do believe it becomes a problem if a student writes too much in passive voice. Early writers, even native speakers, have trouble keeping the subject of a writing or story, so it is best to keep that clear.
