The part about first lessons is very useful, establishing a good rapport between the students is essential for the rest of the course.
The problem with different levels within the same class is usually found in small private schools because of resource reasons (both, teachers and classrooms). I currently have to teach two such classes and it is very difficult indeed, the weaker students cannot follow and at the same time the stronger ones are bored. It is up to the teacher keep control over the classroom by making the lessons interesting for all.
Fortunately my knowledge of L1 (Vietnamese) is very poor and I cannot understand what my students say when the speak their native language. This forces the students to use English and most of them, even at beginners level, manage to get their message through.
My lessons are getting better every time I teach, and this is mainly because of what I have learned in the last few months.
