Unit 17 highlights the importance of understanding how equipment and technology can be beneficial when teaching language. Teachers should make sure they are trained and/or familiar with the technology or equipment being used their classroom. There are many types of teaching aids that could be available for use depending on where you are teaching. Each school will decide for themselves what equipment they will use in the classrooms. Although, there are several pieces of equipment that are common among all classrooms, which include some type of: board (chalk, white, or interactive), visual aids, workbooks, dictionaries, and textbooks. There are many resources available to teachers, both in book form and online. Other equipment and technology that may be beneficial, but not available at all schools would include: computers, overhead projectors, CD/cassette players, work cards, and worksheets. When beginning a job at a new school, it is recommended to ask to have access to the resources available for teachers and become familiar with them. Equipment and teaching aids are a great resource for engaging students and encouraging interaction with real-world experiences.
