This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit covered the pros and cons of coursebooks vs. teacher created lessons, the use of authentic (not created specifically for education) materials and created materials (created specifically for teaching) and considerations in choosing coursebooks. My university has experimented with different coursebooks at an annoying and seemingly random pace. I've worked there for 5 years and we've had 4 different coursebooks. The problem seems to be that administration is deciding on books depending on classified conditions that the teachers weren't privy to. One of the worst English books used many Spanish cities and names as examples, which lead to confusion because of pronunciation differences between Spanish and English while trying to teach to Koreans. I agree completely with this unit's idea that coursebooks aren't gospel. Omission, substitution, additional materials and such are vital to personalizing lessons.
