This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 11 specifically focuses on the reading and listening portion of learning. These two receptive skills should be equally incorporated into each lesson, along with the other basic skills of speaking and writing. Reading and listening are more than simply using our eyes and ears, whether we are skimming, scanning, or looking for detailed information, when we read we must also use pre-existing knowledge to have an understanding of the content. This means recognizing and processing the information to gain a full understanding. Learning to read and listen has many obstacles as well; the length of the word or sentence and the familiarity with the vocab will have large impacts on the students understanding. The best way to deal with these obstacles is by carefully selecting texts based on your students, as well as pre-teaching important vocabulary that will appear in the focus text. These approaches will help students to focus on what they do know, opposed to overwhelming them with what they do not know.
