This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In this unit we saw how a phonetic system can look really hard in the eyes of the students. Basically the teacher as an example of a foreign speech and basic knowledge of IPA is enough. No doubt very few native speakers can determine which sounds are fricative which are affricate and so on. Nor can they tell where exactly the sound starts in your mouth or in your throat. All this stuff just makes topic unnecessary complicated. Reading texts, and listening songs or watching videos in english is much more useful. After the student has a basic vocabulary, IPA once learned can help you to pronounce any text correctly whether you understand the meaning of it or not. Learning by doing(reading, listening, repeating after smb(teacher or bbc news) is much better than any of this theory.
