This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
There are three main aspects of a new language to teach: the vocabulary, the grammar and the function of the language. Vocabulary is very important especially for beginners but there isn't a rulefor which level should be taught.
So the teacherhas to base the lesson on the teacher's book and take in mind that some words are used more often than other, how easy are to learn, if they are appropriate or not to the students or to the task, etc. Usually to teach vocabulary we use a straight arrow ESA approach.
Grammar is more complicated. Students need to know when/how to use it, the form, the pattern, etc. Even with the grammar we use a straight arrow ESA lesson.
The function of a language is teaching an appropriate language (formal, informal, technical) and how to refuse, suggest, disagree or invite. For the language function lessons is more effective a boomerang or a patchwork type ESA lessons.
