I have personally gained a number of key things from taking this course. Firstly I have realized that to be an effective Teacher requires a number of attributes and a lot of thought and planning. For example you need to be able to motivate, develop a rapport with students and critically be able to create and maintain their interest. In addition you have to be able to fulfill several roles including those of being the organizer, assessor, manager, observer and resource. I have learnt that in order to teach different groups I will have to adapt the lessons and my approach. The tips given for the effective teaching of different ages, cultures and ability levels will prove invaluable in the future I am sure. I have gained a far greater knowledge of english grammar especially in relation to the tenses. Before taking this course I never made the distinction between say present simple, present continuous etc. I simply thought of them as ‘the present tense’ so this course has really opened my eyes to these details and intricacies. Along with the modals and passive voice I can see how important they are for effective communication and avoiding misunderstandings. In addition I have gained a strong appreciation of the need to adequately teach pronunciation and phonology and not let these skills be neglected. Being a person who enjoys a degree of structure I really enjoy the lesson plan formats and will definitely try to use them to good effect and boost my confidence in class. I also enjoyed the creative aspect of this course when it comes to thinking up different tasks and activities. My place of work currently is at a 5 star hotel in Bahrain. We have over 50 different nationalities represented and I have liaised with the training manager her so that I can sit in on the english language classes that they hold here. Initially I will just observe and make notes but I then hope to assist in the teaching and to take some classes myself.
