This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This course laid out the grammar lessons systematically, which I needed to see. As a native english speaker, I did not specifically learn proper grammar or sentence structure in a classroom setting. Although I use all of the grammatical structures daily, I did not understand their classifications and rules. This will help me dramatically, if I teach a course that focuses on grammar and accuracy rather than fluency.
Before taking this course, I did not consider the varying types of students I could possibly teach. Knowing the type of student and their needs will help me adapt my lessons. People learn in extremely different ways, and I must be aware of this at all times. I enjoyed having to prepare lesson plans because they made me think realistically about what teaching will be like. I now understand how important these plans are, because I often struggled coming up with new teaching ideas. (I can’t imagine doing this with a classroom full of students.)
As I look back on the class, I am appreciative for all the details the course provided. Information like the classroom set up or student motivations will influence how I teach. I now know that I must always be aware of details. The little things can make a difference in the learning capabilities of my students.
