This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The course has been a real eye opener in terms of how I taught before and how I teach now, with each Unit I feel like I have improved in some aspect of my teaching to progress well along a career path that I hope continues for the foreseeable future.
I also have a new appreciation of how difficult some aspects of english are. I have struggled with certain units and been confused, and I am a native speaker! The experience of taking the TEFL course has definitely made me a more patient and tolerant teacher, and has really helped with being a role model for my students.
It has also taught me the key of succinct planning, now I know how to plan a lesson it has really made the whole process far more streamlined and made my lessons far less disjointed, the students have enjoyed the structure and love the fact that we always kick off with an Engage stage rather than just opening the books as was the case before.
I also feel that the students are getting more from the lessons as I am placing more emphasis on them doing the work and helping less, some lessons I actually take the back seat and let them work organically with speaking and writing exercises that are more open ended. It’s been great to see the students really connect with my lessons in a more profound way.
It has also helped with the simple aspects of teaching as well, like drilling, the 3x3 method is fantastic and adds real structure to the exercise, and also because I pick on random students means everyone has to be listening and paying attention.
All in all it has been a very worthwhile process and one that has taught me a great deal.
