This online teaching course has afforded me the opportunity to explore teaching as a career, and to think about whether teaching is something I would like to take up in the future. My personal circumstances are that I work for a large multinational oil company, and moved from the UK to Malaysia with my husband. After working in Malaysia for 2 years I decided to take a sabbatical, and use this time to do something different. Having worked in an office where the majority of staff spoke english as their second language (and to differing levels), plus spending time every week volunteering at a Malaysian children’s home, I thought it would be interesting to learn more about teaching english. I do not currently intend to take up teaching as a full time career, but will use what I have learnt on this course in any future volunteering work that I do, and also if I return to work in Malaysia or any other country where english is not the first language. I think the content of the course is very good. Some of the modules were useful reminders of what I must have learnt when I was much younger, or what comes naturally to someone whose first language is english. There were also many topics that were completely new to me, and I don’t ever remember being taught them at school! Finally, I think that completing this course has given me respect for the many people who I have met and/or worked with in Malaysia, as I have been reminded how difficult it must be to learn and understand english!
