This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I must admit I did struggle with some of the Units of the course, simply because of my age, length of time out of school, amount of other knowledge stored in the brain and so on. However, it has taught me “you are never too old to learn”, something I can use as a tool when teaching mature students. I realized that my niche, however, would be to teach beginners. As a Mother and a Grandmother I am no stranger to teaching english to my children and grandchildren. A high level of patience is required, something I do have. The material in this course is not unlike teaching your children the english language, i.e. verbs, tenses, speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
My intention when I relocate to the Canary Islands, Spain, is to concentrate more on one-on-one tutoring as it seems to be more in demand there. I enjoy the one-on-one interaction as it relates to my current job as a Counselor. When dealing with one individual at a time you are totally focused on that person and able to develop lesson plans based on their specific level. This method of teaching promotes the self confidence of that individual and assists them in their short comings regarding the english language. I would not be averse to a classroom setting once a week as this would provide me with a challenge and help me to increase my teaching skills, however, that would depend on availability in the local schools.
One might have several students at different times, at different levels which makes teaching more interesting and diverse.
I am a fun person and would bring a fun atmosphere to the lesson, something I am really looking forward too. However, I have to brush up on my creative skills which will no doubt come, once I have completed my full time job and can concentrate on my new career.
I think there would be a huge reward when you see your student leave with a smile and genuine interest in learning english.
