I learned just how much I didn't know about the language I have been speaking my entire life. it's not that I wasn't speaking correctly, I just didn't know why I was saying what I was saying. I knew when something was wrong, just couldn't say why. I gained a new respect for people who are trying to learn a new language. Also, at the same time I am trying to learn a new language as well, spanish. My wife is from Colombia and I can't, at the moment, talk to my in-laws. It's frustrating, especially when we are in Colombia, and I am surrounded by people who can't understand me or me them. I think it is providing me with a good perspective on what new learners are going through and hopefully make me a more effective teacher. On one trip to Colombia, before I started this course, I attempted to help my wife's cousin with his english homework. I was completely lost at trying to convey what I was attempting to teach. He had very little experience with english so it was frustrating for both of us. I now have some tools and a better understanding of how to overcome these obstacles. I can also tell him why, not just say "Because that's just the way it is".
