Why complete a TEFL courseI asked myself this question when I first learned that I could teach english to students around the world. The reasons I found were compelling enough for me to complete a 120 hour course. Taking a TEFL course gives you some skills you will need to use when teaching students in foreign lands. A tefl certification enables the teacher to gain experience in english teaching even before stepping into the classroom*. I have never taught a class before so this was a very attractive point. You are taught how to cover all aspects of teaching english such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Another good reason for taking a TEFL course is that it teaches you how to deal with a classroom. You need to manage a classroom effectively to ensure a controlled lesson where the students can gain the most from the class. As the teacher you are in control of how the lesson goes and what is being covered, but you can have interruptions. A TEFL course explains and provides you with the skills needed to handle these situations. Lesson planning is another big aspect of teaching and every teacher needs to know how to make one. I have never made a lesson plan in my life so I was a little nervous about it. After taking the TEFL course, I was able and confident in making lesson plans with ease. The course gives you all the tools you need to accomplish this and even provided me with examples to follow. With all the practice I had in this course I was writing my own lesson plans in no time. Another major point I needed to consider was how a TEFL certification would help me to obtain work. I did my research and found that almost every place of employment requires some teaching experience or a TEFL certification. A TEFL certification really opens up your options when looking for work. You can teach in public schools or private ones. You can teach a classroom full of students or one on one. A TEFL certification provides you with many opportunities. When you complete a contract in one country you can go and travel to a new one and teach english there as well. This is the great thing about having a TEFL certification; it’s versatile enough to be used in any language setting and is recognized in any country. If you are someone who loves to travel and wants to see the world and experience new cultures, then a TEFL certificate can help you do that. A tourist often just gets to visit a country for a short time and sees just a small portion of the culture and people in that country. Teaching and living in a country will let you see and experience the country fully. You will get to know the people and see how they live and communicate with each other. Taking a TEFL course has been the best choice of my life. I am looking forward to traveling and meeting new people and making new friends.
