Why Complete a TEFL CourseI enrolled in a TEFL course in order to satisfy a requirement set by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education (GPOE). The GPOE paid teachers more if they had a TEFL or TESOL certificate but it was not mandatory to have one. This past year the GPOE required that non-english majors or people without a teaching license from their home country have a TEFL certificate. I had already taught english as a foreign language for one year without a TEFL certificate and my classes went great. The teachers and principal complemented me and were happy with my work. I did not want to take this course because I thought it was too time consuming and a waste of $250. I saw very little benefit compared to the time and money I would have to spend. The benefits of completing a TEFL course slowly became clear as I progressed through the course. I knew how to form grammatically correct sentences but sometime I would struggle to explain why the sentences were written the way they were. There are many grammar rules that need to be explained to students. This course has helped me to be able to better convey those grammar rules to students. As a native speaker, I knew how to read, write, listen and speak at a high level. I found out that simply being a native english speaker is not sufficient to be an effective EFL teacher. I have been an EFL teacher for one year. In my first year of teaching, I taught with several Korean english teachers and they preferred that I teach material from a designated textbook. I had to do little preparation or planning as the teachers wanted me to follow what was in the book very closely and not to deviate from it. I started my second year at a different school. Although I still teach with Korean english teachers, the teachers have given me the freedom to teach material that supplements the textbook. This has required me to give more thought when planning my lessons. This TEFL course has taught me how to make effective and engaging lesson plans. The course has given me many teaching ideas that have worked well in the classroom. I discovered that not always teaching from the textbook and using new ideas make the english classes much more interesting. Students seem interested in learning and that has made EFL teaching more fulfilling to me. I would recommend this course to anyone considering a career in EFL teaching. It opened up my mind to new ways of conveying information. I learned more than just grammar rules. This course teaches you everything from classroom control to new and creative teaching ideas. It taught me how to effectively manage the short 50 minutes that I get to see students every week. I can build rapport with students and I have the tools for dealing with a mixed level class. I have learned effective ways to diagnose what areas a student needs more help with. This course has made me think that I if I had not taken this course, then I could have continued to teach ineffective lessons and done a huge disservice to me students. The regulations that required me to take the TEFL course have turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I believe I have become a better teacher because this course has taught me things that I never thought I would need to learn.
