This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This TEFL course has been extremely useful in honing and clarifying what I already know about teaching english in a foreign country, as well as offering a vast number of ideas and valid new points about teaching.
Currently I am an ALT on the JET programme in Japan. As a result I began teaching english in a classroom with another teacher always present, but essentially learning on the job with little prior knowledge of TEFL teaching. As a result, some of the course content was familiar to me through the experiences I have already had whilst teaching in japan.
Many aspects of the course made me re-think my approach in the classroom and analyse my content, lesson plans and manner in the classroom. The grammar modules in particular were the most valuable for me as they taught me english grammar is a concise and logical way.
I plan to put into action what I have learnt not only in my classroom now but also out. I have already used my increased grammar knowledge in my classroom; I realised that on some occasions I would be introducing what I now know as very complex grammar structures, probably unsuitable for the level I am teaching. I have also taken many ideas for structuring and designing lesson plans. I also plan to use much of what I have leant in future classes with more advanced learners and one-on-one classes.
