This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Having taught EFL in South Korea for 15 months with no prior teaching experience, this course was extremely an enjoyable program for me. While teaching overseas, I would be following formats that really did not make sense to me, but after taking this course I have discovered so many reasons for why I was required to teach certain lessons with distinct structures. The course provided me with a great review of english grammar. I am a native english speaker, and even I have problems learning about modal auxiliary verbs, future grammar tenses and the passive voice. This course provided me with some great tools to review the grammar I’ve mastered, and it gave me a lot appealing ways and ideas on how to teach said points to a live EFL class. All of my previous teaching experience has for teaching monolingual classes from the ages of 7 to 18. I have no experience doing adult teaching. This course gave me some ideas on differences between adult and young learners and their differing needs. I have never had to create a placement exam or a needs analysis, but this course introduced me to the value and importance of these tools. The TEFL course gave me a lot of different ideas and resources for finding good materials. I think the most important thing that I learned from this course was how to lesson plan. I now think lesson planning is extremely important. I also think using authentic materials has a great value that I previously did not notice. This course has given me so many ideas on how to keep the class structured, fun, and rewarding for both the students and myself. I plan to use everything I’ve learned to find out my classes’ level, interests, needs, strengths, weaknesses, etc to create a successful course that exceeds my students expectations with an organized structure that is open to spontaneous authentic materials.
