Online TEFL courses vs onsite TEFL coursesTEFL (Teach english as Foreign Language) courses can be done in two ways- online, or onsite. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Doing an online TEFL course is convenient with regards to travel- there is no need to go anywhere and students can do their course in the comfort of their own home. An online TEFL course also offers the student the opportunity to complete the course at their own pace, this is a positive in the case of not understanding a unit and being able to take ones time going through it. Online TEFL courses also usually offer the support of an online tutor whom the students can email and contact online for support and queries of the course. When choosing to do a TEFL course online, students are however giving up the opportunity to be in a classroom environment and having the physical assistance available to them. Doing a TEFL course online means that when assistance is needed, students need to wait for a reply via the internet and questions that would be asked and answered in person might not have the same effect. The relationship is also far less personal online as it would be in person. Opting to do an online TEFL course also requires a lot of discipline on the student’s behalf- making the time and finding the motivation to actually sit down and complete the course can be challenging. Online TEFL courses also require the use of the internet a lot more so than an onsite TEFL course would require-students therefore need to ensure they have regular internet access available to them. Choosing to do an onsite TEFL course allows the students to have a more personal relationship with their lecturer. Students are also given the opportunity to practice their lesson plans and teaching skills in front of an audience and are offered the support, advice and critique from the lecturer. Being in a classroom environment can also increase motivation and having peers to discuss the work with is also beneficial. Having peers in a lesson also allows for discussions and an opportunity to hear other students’ opinions. Onsite TEFL courses require the physical presence of the students- this means students have to physically set aside a time to addend the lectures. Students doing onsite courses have to move according to the pace set out by the lecturer and class, and not at their own pace which can be done with an online TEFL course. For students who are looking for a more personal and engaging experience with the opportunity to practice their teaching and lesson planning skills, and who have the time to attend lectures, I would recommend doing an onsite TEFL course where there is a lecturer and peer students to offer support and insight. But, for a student who does not have the time, is not concerned with a personal experience and who is diligent and disciplined enough, as well as has the technology required- I would suggest doing an online TEFL course.
