Chongqing is an important industrial and economic center in southwest China and is located on the Yangzi River. The city is popular with tourists from the rest of China and is becoming increasingly popular with international visitors. With several museums, amusement parks and a zoo, there is plenty to see and do in the city itself. As the gateway to the Three Gorges region there is also plenty to enjoy outside the city such as the ancient temple complex of Baidicheng or the Three Natural Bridges; three natural limestone bridges that span the Yangshui River.

Another major draw for tourists is Chongqing Hot Pot, a spicy broth made with Sichuan pepper famous throughout the country. The annual hot pot festival brings many visitors to the city and thousands of restaurants around the city offer discounts on their famous dish.

The city dates back three thousand years and has been the capital of China three times throughout its history most recently during the Second World War when it became known as “the City of Heroes”. Always an important transport hub due to its position on the Yangzi River, the city today is also an important manufacturing and economic center.

Excellent air, road and rail links means getting to the rest of the country from Chongqing is easy and the international airport connects Chongqing directly with a number of international destinations including London, Los Angeles, Moscow and Bangkok. Public transport in the city includes bus, metro and monorail services.

Chongqing has something to offer everyone; the city is steeped in history and at the same time embraces modern Chinese culture. • What does the tuition for the program include?

  Course deposits must be paid to our administrative centre. Credit/debit card payments are the fastest and cheapest way to pay, but we also accept payments via Pay Pal and bank transfer.

  Course fees are all-inclusive so you won’t be asked to pay additional costs for course related services. This also includes moderation and accreditation fees, lifetime job assistance and all our basic services.

  The final payment is to be made to the training center before the first day of your course in cash or by credit card.

• What is an average program day like?

  Class time is generally 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, with mid morning and afternoon breaks and a lunch break. There will be a mixture of workshops, real classroom observation and in-classroom teaching practice supported by the trainer or experienced teachers.

• How many students on average are in the program each month?

  Typically we have around 8 -12 trainees but the maximum is 15. Most of the participants are American, British, Canadian, or Australian, although we do accept non-native speakers of English who have a high proficiency in the language.

• What are the teaching practice students and classes like?

  The students are local people from the city. The experience you gain during the teaching practice will benefit you tremendously. Taking your development step by step only helps you to gain more confidence and help to build your own style of teaching.

• What is the program accommodation like? Where is it located?

  You can stay at a guesthouse in a private room with AC, cable TV and other basic facilities. The place is about 5 minutes away from the school on foot.

• What is the TESOL job market in Chongqing like? Will I have trouble getting a job?

  The job market in Chongqing is strong and there should not be any problems in finding work after graduating if you start looking in plenty of time.

• When do I need to start looking for work in Chongqing? Where do I start?

  It is recommended to start sending out resumes and exploring the available teaching opportunities in the second or third week of the course. Bear in mind that it is a good idea to take your time and get as much information as possible to give you a clear idea of the opportunities available.

• What is the average salary like?

  The average salary for foreign teachers in the Southwest China including Chongqing, Kunming and Chengdu is $1500 USD to $3000 USD per month. The amount you actually earn will depend greatly upon how much you work.

• Do most schools provide accommodation for their teachers?

• What is a typical teaching position like?

  Of course, it varies from school to school, but you may be expected to teach a variety of courses, ranging from children to business professionals at all levels, in groups or in private. Most of the work in Chongqing is at Language Centers and public schools and therefore, most of the hours available are very different. You may need to travel to classes at different schools.

• Can I return to my country and teach with my certificate?

  Yes, it‘s possible although the requirements for working in ESL or TESOL in many Western countries are different and sometimes need graduate education in ESL or TESOL.

• What are the average housing and living expenses in Chongqing?

  Most likely you will rent a room in an apartment or house with other teachers (US$200-300 per month), and of course it depends on where you choose to live. A pleasant, small 2 to 3 bedroom house in Chongqing City is about US$ 400 to 700 per month. Apartments are available for more. It is fair to say that TESOL teachers are very well-paid by local standards in Chongqing, which means they can afford a comfortable standard of living.

• What do I do if I get sick in Chongqing? Are there western-standard medical facilities?

  If you find yourself requiring medical attention, you can go to an international standard clinic. There are 95 international standard clinics in Chongqing.

• How do I get to Chongqing?

  Chongqing is just a 40-minute taxi ride from the airport. A metered taxi charges approximately around RMB 100 to the city center whether the guesthouse and the school are located.

• What documents do I need to bring?

  Please bring your resume/CV because the school will require this in the teaching practice. When you secure work you may be asked to provide originals and copies of your college degrees and transcripts. You might also consider obtaining an international driving permit if driving in Chongqing. PLEASE BRING ALONG COPIES OF YOUR PASSPORT AND VISA ON YOUR FIRST DAY OF THE COURSE FOR REGISTRATION.

• What’s the climate like? What kind of clothing do I need to bring?

  Known as one of the three furnaces in China, Chongqing has a humid sub-tropical climate with very long and very hot summers. The humidity is the highest of any other city in China, and the temperatures get up to 35°C (95°F) in the built-up areas. Though the temperatures are very high, the city experiences a great deal of cloud cover, though this is much less in the summer than in the winter. The winters are shorter and are not too cold, with low temperatures of around 6°C (43°F). The city of Chongqing is also notoriously foggy, with fog for about 100 days each year, which can be hard to deal with! The poor air quality can be a significant problem for some people, as the pollution can be damaging to your health if you are staying there for a long time.
