There are a number of ways to assess a student's language level such as tutorials, evaluation by the students, and tests. Common types of tests are placement test, diagnostic test, progress test, practice test, and proficiency test. Placement tests are level tests which start from easy to hard level. Diagnostic tests allow a teacher to focus his/her planning on the gaps in knowledge. Progress tests are useful to the teacher to show areas of class weakness. Practice tests should be near as possible to the style and content of the real exam. There are several external proficiency tests such as TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, BULATS, and etc.
