This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 12 includes the productive skills, speaking and writing, as well as a brief overview of games in the classroom. After the Engage phase, speaking lessons should usually start with controlled and/or guided activities with immediate correction for accuracy, then lead to a creative activity with delayed correction for fluency. The teacher should be sure to create an encouraging atmosphere, use clear instructions, and allow the students to work in pairs or groups. Writing lessons can be approached in much the same manner, although special attention should be paid to handwriting, spelling and punctuation. Furthermore, the teacher should be sure to point out variation in writing styles (e.g. creative writing vs. business e-mails) and vary activities accordingly. Finally, games are not just a fun distraction, but an integral and time-tested part of any language learning experience. The game list at the end of the unit is particularly useful, and one I'll be sure to refer to when lesson planning.
