This unit described a variety of teaching methodologies, their pluses and minuses, effective ways to apply them in the classroom, examples, etc.
The methodologies outlined are: grammar-translation, audio-lingualism, PPP, task-based, communicative, CLL, the silent way, suggestopaedia, and the lexical approach. Each methodology has pluses and minuses, but the teacher's personality, the culture of the students, and their needs will dictate the best one.
A main portion of this unit was dedicated to an overarching methodology ESA which is comprised of the elements Engage, Study and Activate. ESA is a flexible approach which gives students a good deal of exposure to the language, allows input from the teacher, allows for communicative tasks, keeps anxiety and stress to a minimum, and encourages students to discover the language themselves.
