This unit focused on the tools available for teaching lessons. It outlined the type of lesson materials that are utilized in the classroom. Materials can be divided into authentic and created materials. Authentic includes newspapers and letters written in the language being learned, and created material is typically created by the teacher and can be tailored to the student's level. Furthermore, course books have both advantages and disadvantages. These advantages include an easy way to track progress, suitable material for classes, a balanced lesson of grammar and vocabulary, and draws in students. Disadvantages include text books dictate the majority of a lesson and does not enable the teacher to fit the level of the class. This unit was very helpful and showed me the pros and cons of coursebooks and other lesson materials. I think that a combination of a coursebook, creative material (especially for beginner classes), and authentic material (especially for more advanced classes) is the most effective teaching method.
