Basically, what the unit teaches is how to teach using course books, incorporated with the use of authentic and created materials. It is true that using just the course book can be predictable and boring for the students, and that will be the end of learning English for them. To make the students motivated and interested in learning is to give them a variety of materials- course book, authentic and created materials altogether. Course books are good guides for teachers and students alike as it provides a syllabus which is graded to a level suitable for all students and it offers continuity and progression. It also has a good mix of grammar, vocabulary and skills work, integrated with created materials to adapt it to a specific group of students and focusing on where they usually have difficulty and then giving them authentic materials such as newspaper articles or a short video can give extra knowledge on grammar and vocabulary (not to mention listening skills practice). All of them put together offers great learning materials for students.
