Reading and listening are considered ?receptive skills,? and these are skills to be taught and nurtured. In general, we read or listen for a specific purpose or for entertainment. If students can be taught to recognize the purpose of a reading or listening activity, they can then adapt their focus and approach. For example, if the purpose is to gain a general understanding of a document, a student will practice skimming the document for main points. It is important for students to practice hearing and interpreting language from various sources. A teacher can identify what words, concepts, or grammar structures might be new or particularly challenging for students, and the teacher can pre-teach these components before students are left alone to read or listen to the material.
