This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit explained that language is made up of four skills: reading, listening, writing and speaking. Reading and listening are receptive skills, while writing and speaking are productive skills. Reading and listening can be for both entertainment and for a purpose, and our ability to process the words we read and hear allows us to understand what they mean in the context of our pre-existing knowledge of the world. Receptive skills can be further categorised into skills which include: predicting what content will mean (from little information); scanning content for specific information; skimming content to get the gist; reading and/or listening to understand content in detail; and deducing the meaning of content from the context in which it is presented. Teachers should take care to: use texts which are at the appropriate level and of interest to students; pre-teach unfamiliar vocabulary (generally, only vocabulary which is necessary for students' ability to understand the task more broadly); motivate and engage with students; and use comprehension tasks to encourage students' understanding.
