This unit discusses the two receptive skills of reading and listening. It starts by distinguishing the difference between receptive and productive skills. The unit then talks about the two main uses of receptive skills which are for a purpose and for entertainment. After that, different skills we use when we read are talked about. These include skimming, scannng, for context, for detail, and prediction. This unit then talks about how to help learners with reading, which includes pre-teaching some vocabulary (without overdoing it), and carefully selecting the texts you will teach them. Other ways to help improve students receptive skills are to create interest in the topic before reading, choosing topics of interest to them, and choosing tasks that help promote understanding of the vocabulary being taught.
