Course books are a very emotive issue for many teachers. Most schools would have all the books and materials needed but in reality the teacher however has to create his/her own materials to either supplement the coursebook or replace the sections that are not suitable for the class. These materials can be divided into two groups which are; Authentic materials and Created materials. Authentic materials is anything a native speaker would hear or read such as magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, films on video and many others. Authentic materials are real and therefore more interesting and motivating, students gain confidence when they understand them. They can be geared to the interest of a particular group of students. Created materials on the other hand are usually designed by the teacher to replace or supplement materials from a coursebook such as crosswords, word search puzzles, role-play cards, flash cards, gap fill activities, picture stories.
