Understanding and teaching receptive skills is a complex subject. First, we must understand that receptive skills include reading and listening, and that when we read and listen, we are using other individual skills like, skimming, scanning, predicting, deducting, or reading for specific information. Teaching receptive skills should focus on selecting material that interests and motivates the students, building interest before reading or listening, pre-teaching the complex vocabulary, varying material over time so as to reach all students' interests, using material to practice different skills, using realistic comprehension tasks, and incorporating activate phases that draw from the given text.
