Of the four basic skills of any language, reading and listening are the \"receptive\" skills. Reading and listening may be motivated by a purpose or for entertainment. Obviously, one needs to understand the words and their meaning before effectively reading or listening to them. In order to teach this, several skills are necessary: predictive skills/for specific information which is known as scanning/for a general idea, known as skimming/for detailed information/deduction from content. It is important for the teacher to pre-teach vocabulary words and carefully select the text and topics. A variety of topics should be covered to expand the skills but the topics should be of interest to all.
