Course material has definite advantages; it is a tried-and tested syllabus which gives you the basis for a lesson, with a balanced mixture of skills; reading and comprehension, language point/structure to teach as well as vocabulary and pronunciation. However it may be out-dated, visually unappealing or uninteresting to your group. I believe the teacher should use it but not base the entire lesson on it - add her own, stimulating material and swap out any unsuitable material.
Usually the material shows a progression of language taught and reviews the past material which is good. It is much easier to use this material as the backbone and add extra elements and interest, than re-invent the wheel.
