To assess students' language level, teachers can give tutorials, evaluations by students, or testings.
In tests, students may be given placement tests, progress tests, achievement tests, external examinations, and proficiency tests; all three serve different purposes for the class and the teachers.
Placement test assigns new students into the appropriate class according to their ability in the language. Progress tests are used actively throughout the school term in order for both teachers and students to know their weakness to work on. Diagnostic tests are similar to placement but can be extensive. Practice tests are used to give the students an idea of what the actual examination will be like.
