This unit reviewed the teaching of the productive language skills: speaking and writing. I learned that teaching writing can be very difficult, especially in cultures where the prevailing language is not written with Roman characters. Since I live in Japan and expect to teach English here, there's a handful of challenges I will have to face. Teaching speaking skills, specifically punctuation, will also be difficult because their language is much more phonetic than ours. However, this unit also presented some solutions for these problems such as appropriate timing and duration for drilling, and fitting in questions with an answer which anticipates use of the target language early in the study phase.
