Evaluation and testing are the best ways to monitor a student's progress. Equally important are student surveys/progress tests. Becoming aware of weaknesses in the class as a whole helps the teacher to reevaluate sections when it appears the students need review or readdressing of the topic. Teacher surveys also help the teacher to see what improvements she may need to address in her teaching style or delivery.
Testing comes in many forms. Placement is a must to determine the students level. Progress helps with evaluation. External tests help the student further their level of education and helps to certify that they can be up for the next challenge, the next promotion their next level in education.
