Unit Eleven covered how to go about teaching receptive skills. There are four basic language skills, but this unit focused on reading and listening. When teaching receptive skills, it is important to pre-teach complex vocabulary and carefully select the texts you will be giving your students. I learned a lot with this unit on what putting these concepts into practice looks like, thanks to the Patchwork ESA example with Elvis. I learned that there is a different between authentic and non-authentic texts, and each one serves a different purpose. Authentic texts are not designed for language students but will build their confidence, while non-authentic texts will be more suited to the students' abilities.
